Not illustrated. 1882 Excerpt: ...in sufficiently to prevent damage from falls. These pits were troublesome and dangerous, and fell in very soon after the arch was completed. The remainder of the 'fall, ' a distance of 60 feet, was tunneled. To do this, three other drifts, B, B, B, were "started, two directly over those now enclosing the side-walls and the third at the top of the tunnel, the top of the latter being 1 foot above the crown of the timber arch. These three having been driven through, as before described, others on the line, C C C were driven transversely to connect them. These were begun at the central drift, and kept about 1 foot above the position of the timber arch, to allow for settling, and were made from 3 to 6 feet in width, as circumstances permitted. As the side-drifts were completed, the timber arch was put in and well packed, until 10 feet were secured. The brick arch was then built; the core of eartli remaining served as a base for props to keep the timber arch in place, but was not firm enough to bear any considerable weight; the timber arch resting on the side-walls took much the greater part of the strain. This process was repeated six times, until the masonry was finished, when the excavation of the slide was completed. For financial reasons also, no invert was put in at the time, but was planned, as shown in Fig. 400, to be put in afterward, if found necessary. A thorough system of drainage was considered all that was needed for some undetermined time after the opening of the tunnel for traffic." The foregoing is Mr. Bolton's detailed account of the construction of this noted tunnel. General I. M. St. John, Consulting Engineer Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad, adds that in the summer of 1876 it became necessary to build 536 linear feet of invert arch. This...
